Over the last four weeks, I’ve been reviewing the Samsung Galaxy S4. The device is a key part of Samsung’s strategy for the next 12 to 18 months, with the Galaxy S4 acting as the base unit for a range of devices. At this week’s product launch, we saw five colour variants of the S4 along with the Galaxy NX camera, while journalists got their hands on the new Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy S4 Zoom, and Galaxy S4 Active.

If Samsung can establish the main Galaxy S4 handset as successfully as they did the S3, then these variants and offshoots will have little trouble finding their niche markets while benefiting from the recognition of the Galaxy brand.
This strategy is why the Galaxy S4 is a very important handset for the South Korean manufacturer. If the S4 doesn’t set the world alight, it’s going to be much harder to market the child handsets.

Looking back over my time with the Galaxy S4, I found a handset that was afraid to take risks. While the hardware in the handset is made up of the biggest numbers, the physical build quality is average at best. Samsung’s TouchWiz interface has changed very little since the Galaxy S3, and while there are some new UI tricks including eye tracking and air gestures, these add little to the day to day experience.

  












The worry is simple – now the first wave of buyers have picked up the handset, does Samsung have enough momentum to keep the S4 ahead of the chasing pack of high-end android devices such as the HTC One and the Sony Xperia Z? I’m not convinced, although I do acknowledge they have a huge amount of brand recognition already that has helped make the Galaxy S4 become one of the fastest selling Android devices.
But looking at just the handset over my month of reviews, it’s not as far ahead of the pack as the hype would have you believe.

First Impressions:

“Much like a Toyota or a Ford, the Samsung Galaxy S4 is a workhorse phone. It has nice lines, it has all the specs you would expect in this price range, and it gets the job done. There are more handsets out there with a bit more flair, operating systems that have a better overall experience in terms of UI or apps, but the Galaxy S4 feels like a Swiss army knife. It’s brutally pretty, it’s going to sell by the crate load as the functional phone that does everything, and it’s going to be regarded as a workhorse handset.
“It’s also going to be seen as a bit of a safe bet. The Galaxy brand name is well known, and appreciated. Buying a Galaxy S4 might not be the cutting edge thing to do, but you’ll get something that does the job without being too fancy or ostentatious.”
