September 9 is a very important day in the history of Pakistan hockey. On this day 60 years ago, Pakistan defeated India 0-1 in the 1960 Rome Olympics to become the Olympic hockey champions for the first time.
In the
final, Left-in-Naseer Banda scored the lone and decisive goal to give Pakistan
a gold medal, ending India's 32-year lead as Olympic champions since 1928.
Earlier in
the semi-finals, Pakistan defeated Spain 0-1 thanks to Atif's goal. Pakistan
was considered the favorite team in the Rome Olympics as India lost to Pakistan
in the final against Pakistan in the final of the last Melbourne Olympics 1956.
Pakistan had won the Asian Games in 1958 by defeating India.

After the
victory, Avery Brandeis, President of the International Olympic Committee,
presented gold medals to Pakistan's national athletes at the Victory Stand.
Pakistan's first-ever Olympic champion was celebrated across the country.
With the
victory of Pakistan, people happily took to the streets and started dancing
while sweets were distributed in innumerable places. The President of Pakistan
Field Marshal Ayub Khan also sent a message of congratulations to the national
hockey team.
It should be
noted that after the formation of Pakistan, the Pakistan hockey team had won
the fourth position by participating in the London Olympics held in 1948 for
the first time. Then in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, Pakistan was ranked fourth.
Later, in the final of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, Pakistan competed with
India and won a silver medal.
