40-year-old Lebanese doctor denied German citizenship for refusing to shake woman's hand

Berlin:

Germany's provincial court has also ruled that a Muslim doctor who refused to shake the hand of a woman should not receive German citizenship.

According to the International Broadcasting Corporation, the 40-year-old Muslim doctor of Lebanese origin had first approached the Stuttgart City Court on the issue of citizenship, which the court had refused to grant citizenship, declaring it radical for not shaking hands with a non-mahram woman.

Disappointed with the city court, the Muslim doctor had filed a lawsuit in the provincial court of Baden-Württemberg (VGH), Germany, seeking justice, but the court also rejected the 40-year-old Lebanese doctor's application without giving any reason.

Baden-Württemberg’s court ruled that the applicant should not be granted citizenship because he or she did not shake hands with the woman. Muslim doctors have been touring various German courts since 2015 for citizenship.

The man had stated in his statement before the court that he did not shake hands with a non-mahram woman in accordance with the Shariah and that he had promised his wife not to shake hands with any other woman.

It should be noted that the said doctor started working after completing his medical education in Germany and applied for German citizenship in 2012. A female officer was giving him a citizenship certificate during a ceremony in 2015, but the Muslim doctor refused to shake hands with the non-mahram woman.
